Lagos, July 1, 2026 – The Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, EHOAN Lagos State Chapter, and the Body of Heads of Environmental Health Services Departments, Lagos State, on Tuesday paid an official visit to the Chairman of Chairmen, Conference 57, Hon. Abdullah Olowa, to deliberate on urgent solutions to refuse accumulation across Lagos State Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.
Led by the President of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, Dr. Akinyele Cyril Babasope, the delegation urged the strengthening of Environmental Health Services Departments in all 57 councils, with special emphasis on the Waste Management Unit.
“Local governments are at the frontline of waste management, but the departments need more support to meet this emergency,” Dr. Babasope said during the meeting in Hon. Olowa’s office.
Hon. Olowa, who also serves as Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved 114 compactors for local governments, translating to two compactors per council. He said enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal has been made mandatory statewide.
The Chairman of Chairmen noted that Conference 57 is advocating for Local Government-owned waste transfer stations to serve as feeder points for the Lagos Waste Management Authority. He revealed that Ibeju-Lekki has already procured land for its transfer station and urged other councils to adopt the model.
“We are committed to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for Lagosians. Environmental Health Officers must intensify public enlightenment and enforcement,” Hon. Olowa stated.
The Chairman of the Body of Heads of Environmental Health Services Departments, Lagos State, San. Oladapo Femi, commended the Conference 57 chairmen for their leadership during the waste crisis.
The President, Dr. Babasope, presented the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter Position Paper to Hon. Olowa at the close of the meeting.
Hon. Olowa pledged to convene a stakeholders’ meeting involving council chairmen, council managers, Lagos Waste Management Authority management, the Commissioner for Environment, and Heads of Environmental Health Services Departments to agree on lasting solutions. He also undertook to address the issue of Customary Court jurisdiction to hear environmental health cases.
