Pioneering Environmental Health in Lagos State.

The Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Lagos Chaptertraces its roots back to the early post-independence era, when environmental sanitation and public hygiene became national priorities in response to urbanization and rising health concerns in cities like Lagos.

Establishment and Early Years

Formally established as a chapter under the national body EHOAN, the Lagos Chapter began as a coalition of Sanitary Inspectors—the earliest forerunners of today’s Environmental Health Officers (EHOs)—working across Local Government Areas (LGAs), health units, and sanitary departments.

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, as Nigeria’s public health system evolved, EHOAN Lagos became a recognized professional platform where trained officers could collaborate, advocate, and pursue excellence in environmental health practices within the state.

Transformation and Growth

The transition from Sanitary Inspection to a more professionalized Environmental Health discipline led to increased training, certification, and regulatory enforcement among officers. EHOAN Lagos responded by expanding its functions—from being just a union of officers to becoming a body that drives research, public education, continuous training, and policy advocacy.

During this time, EHOAN Lagos became instrumental in:

  • Supporting the creation of standardized CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programs for EHOs

  • Partnering with Lagos State Government, NCDC, WHO, and other health-focused agencies

  • Leading major environmental health campaigns such as “Clean Lagos,” Market Sanitation Exercises, School Health Programs, and Flood Preparedness Sensitization in flood-prone areas.

Milestones Over the Years

  • 2002 – Formal inauguration of the EHOAN Lagos Secretariat.

  • 2007 – Partnered with Lagos State Ministry of Health on the first state-wide cholera prevention campaign.
